Talent profiles are changing

Workforce profiles are changing globally. Within the next decade, Millenials will make up three-quarters of the talent profile of most companies. Generation Z will be entering the workforce, Baby Boomers will have retired and Generation X will be in the final leg of their careers.

Millenials, the dominant employee segment, have grown up in a connected, technology-based world, with the expectation of values-based workplaces, flexibility, clear career pathing, ample development and understanding the reason behind what they do. Technological connectedness will increasingly be driving organisations.

In the Middle East, Africa and Asia, the population is significantly younger than more developed economies. The target labour market will have greater choice of where they work, shifting the onus to companies to define and project a clear employment brand.

What does this mean for HR?

Where companies have not already, moving to an effective, highly-skilled business partnering model is an obvious step toward effective alignment of the business and HR, putting greater emphasis on HR to provide responsive services that create impact on the front-line.

HR also need to confront the realities that changing workforce and technology bring to the organisation. Now, and into the next decade, the core focus will be an integrated approach to talent. Research company Bersin have identified the nine critical talent challenges, around which research suggests HR should now provide integrated solutions.

Nine Critical Talent Imperatives for 2015

The challenge for HR becomes how to be less compartmentalised and more cross-functionally focused on talent across the life-cycle, with a core focus on engagement as the critical driver of productivity and retention.
