Given that, you don’t want to get stuck doing a job that doesn’t make you happy. Build a career that gives you meaning and value.

Only you can take responsibility for where you want your career to go and how to get there. It isn’t always easy, but here are five tips to help you:

01Find your passion

What will make you get out of bed each day with boundless energy? If you are not sure, find out! Your career will be easier and more rewarding if you know what you are truly passionate about.

Spend time reflecting on what excites you. Ask your friends what they notice makes you 'light up.' Perhaps take an assessment to discover where your occupational strengths lay.

Whatever you do, make sure you can complete this sentence: The core passion I want to build my career on is…

"Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life."

(Confucius, ancient Chinese philosopher)

find your passion

02Make it real

Start by creating a clear vision of what your career will look like in one, five and ten years. What will your success look and feel like? Perhaps create an image board to capture exactly what you imagine for your future.

Next, get specific and concrete. Set some short, medium and long-term goals. Don’t be afraid to commit – write them down. Put them in a place you can see them each day.

"If you can DREAM it, you can DO it."

(Walt Disney)

Make it Real

03Keep learning

Look for opportunities to learn. Is there a project you can volunteer for? Can you help pilot a new initiative? Could you can take on some new tasks that help you grow?

Leave your desk and learn about the whole company. You never know where your next career move will come from, so be ready!

"Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner."

(Chinese Proverb)

Keep Learning

04Reach out

Think back to when you were small and you could go to a parent or grandparent and ask anything. Remember how it helped you to better understand the world?

It’s the same at work. Find a mentor you can go to for advice. Do you know someone at work? Perhaps a different company? Maybe someone in your family?

If you can’t think of someone, use LinkedIn, attend networking functions or even ask your friends.

"A mentor is someone that allows you to see hope."

(Oprah Winfrey)

Reach Out

05Keep on moving

Mistakes are a good chance to learn, so avoid blaming yourself.

Think back to the last mistake you made. What did you learn? What will you do differently next time? Remember this golden rule: leave the mistake behind and take the lesson forward to tomorrow.

"Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again."

(Nelson Mandela)
